How to Get a YouTube Video Transcript

Whether you need quotes for an essay, script notes for a podcast, or study materials from a lecture, here is how to extract transcripts on any device.

Method 1: Using YouTube's Native Desktop Interface

YouTube provides a native transcript sidebar for most videos that have closed captions enabled. While this viewer does not include a direct export or download button, it allows you to read alongside playback and jump to specific timestamps.

  1. Open the Video: Navigate to the YouTube video on your desktop web browser.
  2. Expand the Description: Click "...more" directly under the video title in the description area.
  3. Click "Show transcript": Scroll to the bottom of the expanded description. You will see a section labeled Transcripts with a button titled Show transcript.
  4. Navigate the Sidebar: A transcript panel will open to the right of the video player. You can click any line to jump the video to that moment.
  5. Toggle Timestamps: Click the three vertical dots at the top of the transcript box and choose "Toggle timestamps" if you wish to select and copy text without timecode numbers.

Limitation of Native YouTube: Copying text manually from YouTube's sidebar often introduces unwanted line breaks, timestamp artifacts, or missing punctuation. If you are copying a 45-minute lecture, manual selection can be cumbersome.

Method 2: Accessing Transcripts on the YouTube Mobile App

You can also view transcripts directly inside the YouTube mobile app on iOS and Android:

  1. Open the video in the YouTube mobile app.
  2. Tap on the video title or the "...more" prompt to expand the description drawer.
  3. Scroll down past the description links until you see the Transcripts block.
  4. Tap Show transcript. A bottom sheet will expand displaying the timed speech segments.

What to Do If No Transcript Is Available

Not every video has a transcript. If the transcript button is missing or returns an error, common reasons include:

  • Processing Delay: For newly uploaded videos, YouTube's automatic speech recognition algorithm can take from 15 minutes to several hours to generate closed captions.
  • Audio Characteristics: Videos with no spoken dialogue, heavy background music, or poor audio fidelity may fail automatic speech recognition.
  • Private or Unlisted Content: Third-party extractors cannot access private videos where authentication is required.
